The first call for submissions opened on July 7, 2025 and provides funding in two categories:
Up to $25,000 for communities to establish their own Survivor Committees or
Anywhere between $100,000 and $250,000 (per year for up to four years, or as one-time funding only depending on each pillar) for programs and activities deemed by existing Survivor Committees and communities where funds are needed most.
The Legacy Fund will provide funding to a Survivor Community listed in Schedule K of the Federal Indian Day Schools Settlement Agreement under the following allocations:
Healing & Wellness
Up to $250,000 per year for up to 4 years
Language & Culture
Up to $100,000 per year for up to 4 years
Commemoration
Up to $100,000 for one-time funding only. This funding can be split up over 4 years, up to a maximum total of $100,000
Truth Telling
Up to $100,000 for one-time funding only. This funding can be split up over 4 years, up to a maximum total of $100,000
Things to consider
A Survivor Applicant Group can only apply to one pillar of their choice in Round 1.
Funding has been allocated under each pillar to manage funds and make sure the Legacy Fund is shared across the pillars in a responsible way.
Successful applicants will not be able to apply for funding in the same pillar under Round 2 but they can apply under a different pillar.
MDSSC is hopeful that with community-based first Nation and Inuit leadership and the perspectives of Federal Indian Day School Survivors, the Legacy Fund will create positive pathways and be a major source of support for Survivors, their communities and their families.
